The question of why this gap exists has a straightforward answer rooted in how each system was designed. One was built for an era of physical ledgers and business hours. The other was built to move value the way the internet moves data.

Layered approval process

Every bank deposit travels through a chain before it arrives anywhere. Sending banks validate requests, pass on requests to correspondent institutions if borders are involved, and receiving banks process them on their end. Three organisations at minimum, each with its own system, schedule, and compliance requirements. None of them communicates in real time.

That layered structure is the first reason traditional deposits are slow. Add in the SWIFT network’s batch processing cycles, which group transactions and run them at fixed intervals throughout the day, and the delays compound. Domestic transfers run into the same issue. Banks reconcile their ledgers overnight, which means a deposit submitted at 6 pm on a Friday may not clear until Monday morning.

Distributed network speed

Crypto transactions sidestep this entire model. There is no chain of institutions involved. When a player initiates a deposit, the transaction gets broadcast directly to the blockchain network, where it is picked up by thousands of nodes simultaneously. Each node works on verifying it at the same time. This parallel verification is the core reason why crypto deposits are fast:

  • No institution needs to hand the transaction off to another
  • Verification is distributed, so no single point slows the process
  • The network runs continuously, every hour of every day, without exception
  • Confirmation is final once it happens, with no settlement lag afterwards

No waiting period

A second key reason is settlement. Traditional banking separates the moment a payment looks complete from the moment it actually is. A credit card transaction may appear instant on screen, but it sits in a pending state for several days while the backend processes it. That pending window exists because banks reconcile accounts in batches rather than in real time.

Blockchain does not work in batches. Each transaction settles individually and immediately upon confirmation. For Bitcoin, that typically takes ten minutes. On faster networks like Solana or Litecoin, it takes seconds. There is no pending window, no overnight clearing, and no processing queue to join. The deposit that arrives is the deposit that stays.

Direct transaction path

One of the easiest ways to determine why there is a speed gap is to count the steps. A traditional bank deposit involves a sending institution, possibly a correspondent bank, a payment network, and a receiving institution. Each step adds time, and none of those steps communicates with each other in real time.

Crypto removes every one of those steps. The transaction goes directly from one wallet to another, confirmed by a network that operates around the clock and answers to no central authority. That directness is the reason. It was never about technology being newer or faster in some vague sense. It is about removing the friction that intermediaries, by their very nature, always create.
