Crystal Island is a planned construction project in Moscow, Russia, which is scheduled currently has about 2.5 million acres (27 million square feet) area at a height of 450 meters (1476 feet), designed by Norman Foster . These dimensions will then be the largest structure (in space) on earth. The architectural firm behind the project is Foster and Partners.
The tent-like superstructure will rise 450m, and is a breathable “second skin” and thermal buffer for the main building, shielding the interior from the weather in Moscow. This second skin is closed in winter to minimize heat loss, and opened in summer to cool the inside of the track.
The building will be a new park that would offer a variety of activities throughout the year, will be integrated with long and skating in winter. It is stated to have a mass of cultural, exhibition, performance, hotel, apartment, retail and office space, as well as an international school for 500 students.
The building will be power-driven by integrated solar cells and wind turbines. The site was also in the field of renewable and low carbon energy production. Since 2009 has been postponed due to the construction of the global financial crisis.
